Following two roster moves this week by the Dallas Cowboys, the team is now making their corresponding moves. After signing free agent defensive end Carl Lawson and trading for defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, the Cowboys are now waiving defensive tackle Carl Davis. One more move is expected to come down the wire, according to team reporter Nick Harris.

Davis joined the team in November as a member of the practice squad and the team opted to keep him around for another season. During the 2023 season, the team elevated Davis for the league maximum of three games before being reverted to the practice squad for the remainder of the season. Once the season ended, he became a free agent without a futures/reserves deal.

The Baltimore Ravens drafted Davis as a third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Iowa. He’s been a bit of a journeyman with other stops in Baltimore, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, New England and Seattle. The 32-year-old defensive tackle has racked up 68 tackles with 2.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss in 19 starts in the league. His last deal with New England was for one year, $1.3 million.

Cowboys sign Carl Lawson, trade for Jordan Phillips

The Dallas Cowboys shored up the defensive side of the ball this week following the injury to backup defensive end Sam Williams at the start of camp. The team brought in several defensive ends for workouts after Williams’ ACL tear and they’re now adding to the bunch. On Wednesday, the Cowboys traded for Giants DT Jordan Phillips, and now, they’re adding veteran defensive end Carl Lawson, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Lawson worked out for Dallas following Williams’ injury, and now, he’s set to join the squad as they approach their second preseason game.

Lawson, a former fourth-rounder out of Auburn, last played a full 17 games in 2022 for the Jets. That season, he had seven sacks, bringing his six-year NFL total up to 27 sacks with 9.5 tackles for loss. He began his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Late Wednesday evening, the Cowboys pulled off a rare trade agreement with their heated NFC East conference foes, the New York Giants. The Giants agreed to trade defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to the Cowboys.

In exchange for the veteran defensive tackle, Dallas is sending a sixth-round pick to New York. However, the Cowboys get a seventh-round pick in the trade as well.

Phillips started his career with the Miami Dolphins after they selected him in the second round with the No. 52 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He’s bounced around a bit, playing for the Buffalo Bills on two separate occasions, along with the Arizona Cardinals, and most recently signing with the New York Giants.
