Dallas Cowboys website lists Daniel Jones, sends NFL world into frenzy
Just hours after his release from the New York Giants (2-8), quarterback Daniel Jones was listed on the Dallas Cowboys’ (3-7) official website as a member of their roster.
That led some to believe that Jerry Jones had quietly signed Jones, though that’s not exactly the case. Nick Harris of DallasCowboys.com explained why Jones popped up on the team’s website.
“This is used so that Jones’ player card can be used in articles and updates. Him along with numerous other opponents have player cards because cowboys dot com does a thorough and in-depth job. Nothing to see here,” Harris wrote on X.
NFL insider Josina Anderson added that the Cowboys “are not currently pursuing” Jones.
Jones, once he passes through waivers as expected, will become a free agent after requesting his release during a conversation with Giants president John Mara. His release comes three days after head coach Brian Daboll benched him in favor of Tommy DeVito for this Sunday’s Week 12 home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-6).

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network explained the financial ramifications of New York moving on from Jones.
“Releasing him now means the #Giants will take the full $22.21 million dead cap hit in 2025,” Pelissero wrote on X. “Jones would’ve counted $41.605M against the cap if he were on the roster, so they save $19.395M in 2025 cap space (plus $30.5M cash) and Jones is off the books in 2026.”
Daniel Jones shares goodbye message to Giants fans after final practice
Jones, 27, signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension in March 2023 after leading the Giants to the playoffs in 2022. Jones guided New York to a 9-6-1 record with a Wild Card Round win that season, but it was a struggle outside of that. In total, Jones went 24-44-1 under center in New York — far from what the Giants expected when they selected him No. 6 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Jones issued a goodbye to Giants fans upon taking to the podium Thursday.
“The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true,” Daniel Jones said. “I’m extremely grateful to the Mara and Tisch families for the chance to play here. The Giants are truly a first-class organization, and I have nothing but genuine respect and appreciation for the people who have built it and who helped carry on that tradition.
“I’ve met so many special people and created relationships that will last a lifetime. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches and staff that have done so much for me these past six years. There have been some great times, but of course, we all wished there been more of those. I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. No one wanted to win more games worse than me. And I gave everything I had on the field and preparation.”
