According to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Dallas Cowboys have picked up the fifth-year option of wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. A first-round pick coming out of Oklahoma during the 2020 NFL Draft, Lamb has emerged as a true No. 1 wide receiver over the past year.

Now, he will be with the franchise through at least the 2024 season.

“The Cowboys exercised the 5th year option on WR CeeDee Lamb, per source,” Hill said.

When Dallas decided to move on from Amari Cooper last offseason, Lamb was put in a bigger role. He was expected to step up and perform. Since then, Lamb has delivered in a big way, especially with Dak Prescott missing some time due to injury.

Lamb was available for all 17 regular season games, having 107 receptions for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns. It’s the second 1,000-yard season for the young receiver. In playoff games against Tampa Bay and San Francisco, Lamb was impressive in both. He caught 14 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.

The connection Lamb has built with Prescott is one that Dallas hopes continually strikes heading into 2023. And if a long-term contract extension can be figured out past the 2024 season, for many years to come.

Dallas and Lamb will be hoping the partnership goes a little longer than 2024, though. An extension will eventually come Lamb’s way. Alongside star cornerback Trevon Diggs, Executive Vice President Stephen Jones says extending the wide receiver will soon be a top priority for the Cowboys.

“As we move forward that’ll become a bigger priority here as we move past the draft,” Jones said. “We’ve historically signed a lot of guys during that training camp period to extensions.

“But guys like CeeDee Lamb and Diggs are certainly on our radar in terms of guys that we’d love to have around here for another five, six years, whatever that turns out to be.”

Over the course of seven rounds, Dallas may take a wide receiver to pair with not just Lamb but also Michael Gallup. Tight end will be a possibility as well. Point being — the Cowboys need to add another offensive weapon for Prescott.

Lambs is a solid WR1 and has proven himself over the past three years. But he will not be able to do it all by himself, even with a fresh contract in the near future.
