WATCH: Theo Pinson ignores head NBA ref Marc Davis' request to change shirts
During the Western Conference Finals, you would think most of the controversy would come on the court. That hasn’t been the case so far with the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors. It’s been how players are dressed on the bench dominating most of the headlines.
During Game 2, Dallas’ Theo Pinson was wearing a white shirt while standing up on the sideline. With the Warriors wearing white jerseys, Steph Curry got confused when trying to make a pass, throwing the ball straight to Pinson for an out of bounds. Even though the NBA decided to fine the Mavericks $100,000, Pinson decided to wear a similar shirt on Sunday night for Game 3.
NBA referee Marc Davis was trying to help Pinson out, by asking the player to make a wardrobe change.
“Hey, do me a favor,” Davis said. “Can you change your color shirt? Will you? I appreciate it.”
When Pinson asked Davis why he needed to change, the referee responded by saying “because you’re in the same color as them and you’re going to be in the way.” Davis even offered to buy Pinson a new shirt if the Mavs player just sent over the bill.

Pinson did not change his shirt before tipoff and will be on the sideline wearing white. Standing for a majority of the game as well, Pinson has been a huge energy boost for the Mavericks as they look to get their first win of the series.
Some more humor came out of the situation as well, with commissioner Adam Silver getting involved as well. Silver was in attendance on Sunday and Pinson began to walk over to say hello during a timeout. Both parties had a laugh about the situation according to Marc Stein.
“Adam Silver is in attendance tonight in Dallas,” Stein said. “During that last off-TV stoppage in play, Theo Pinson and Tim Hardaway Jr. – leaders of the Mavs’ Bench Decorum Unit — wandered as close as they could get to nod hellos at the commissioner. Everyone appeared to see the humor in it.”
