Dan Orlovsky: Cowboys offense sets Dak Prescott up to fail
Dan Orlovsky didn’t hold back when discussing the issues with the Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys offense. On ESPN’s Get Up, the former NFL quarterback explained why the Cowboys have let Prescott down at the start of the season.
“I don’t think there’s an offense in football that sets their quarterback up to fail more than the Cowboys do than Dak Prescott,” Orlovsky said. “The fundamental ways to get your quarterback to play better or make it easier to play better, you run the football, the Cowboys can’t. You use play-action, the Cowboys don’t, you use motion, the Cowboys don’t, you throw screens, the Cowboys don’t.
“They’re bottom three or four in a couple of them, bottom 10 essentially in all of them. In many ways, they’re saying Dak Prescott, we want this to be as hard as possible on you.”
Orlovsky added the Cowboys’ issues reminded him of when Tom Brady joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and “they’re so reliant on high-end execution.” He then said, “It’s the same with the Cowboys offense. It’s so easy for them to be like ‘This guy sucks.’ No, they’re making it hard to execute consistently.”

Dak Prescott reveals a big issue with the Cowboys’ offense
After having one of the best seasons in his career in 2023, Prescott is off to a slow start to the 2024 season. In three games, the Mississippi State alum has completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 851 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions with an 85.8 passer rating.
In Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, Prescott threw for 379 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-25 loss. While those numbers are strong, the Cowboys had to battle from a 21-6 deficit at halftime to make it close.
After the game, Prescott talked about the offense having a more “professional” approach. “Yeah, by knowing where you’re supposed to be. Knowing your reads, knowing where you’re supposed to line up, knowing your routes – adjustments versus certain coverages,” Prescott said, per the Cowboys’ official website. “Every part of what being a professional is it’s doing your job and being prepared for every part of the job. So time away from the building to being in the building, just being a pro and understanding that you can only get so many practice reps, but you can watch the film, you can do all these other things that’ll help make up for it. And we just got to be more focused.”
