Daniel Jones contract details: NFL insider reveals Vikings deal for former Giants QB
The Minnesota Vikings (9-2) signed quarterback Daniel Jones to their practice squad Wednesday, a move in which they hardly had to break the bank to pull off.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Jones’ one-year deal is valid through the remainder of the season and worth $100,000 if he stays on the practice squad. Jones, who was granted his release from the New York Giants (2-9) this past Friday, remains scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season.
With Jones going on Minnesota’s practice squad, he can still sign with another team should a starting quarterback go down with an injury in the next three weeks. Nick Mullens will continue to backup Sam Darnold as Jones presumably gets up to speed with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offense.
As of now, the only Vikings quarterback under contract for next season is J.J. McCarthy, the 2024 first round pick who suffered a season-ending meniscus injury in his right knee during his preseason debut.
Vikings take a flier on Daniel Jones
O’Connell, who evaluated Jones throughout the pre-draft process in 2019 while offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders (7-5), spoke highly of the 27-year-old Monday when asked the possibility of signing him.

“I will say tons of respect for Daniel Jones as a player and a person. Got to know him through the draft process years ago,” O’Connell said, via Kevin Seifert of ESPN. “I’m sure now that he’s a free agent and there’s probably a ton of league-wide interest in him, Daniel is going to make the decision that is best for him and his career moving forward. And I’m sure he’s working through that process right now.
“… I can just say that I’ve been a big fan of Daniel’s for a long time. And I hope wherever his next step takes him, it’s a good opportunity for him.”
Jones finished his Giants career with a 24-44-1 record and 70 touchdown passes to go along with 47 interceptions. New York will take on a $22.21 million dead cap hit in 2025.
