Report: Daniel Jones signing with Minnesota Vikings after release from Giants
The Minnesota Vikings (9-2) are signing free agent quarterback Daniel Jones to their practice squad, Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports reported Wednesday.
Jones, 27, was granted his release from the New York Giants (2-9) earlier this month after being benched in favor of Tommy DeVito. Jones will have the opportunity to step into the backup role behind Sam Darnold, a spot currently occupied by Nick Mullens.
“A key factor in Daniel Jones signing with the Vikings was his relationship with HC Kevin O’Connell, which actually dates back to the pre-draft process. I’m told the two maintained positive communication over the past few days, with KOC believing not only in Jones’ talent, but also that Minnesota is the perfect place to reinvigorate his career,” Schultz wrote on X.
Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension in March 2023 after leading the Giants to the playoffs in 2022. Jones guided New York to a 9-6-1 record with a Wild Card Round win that season. But with his play falling off the last two seasons, New York made the decision to move on. Jones also had a $23 million injury guarantee for next season.

The No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Duke, Jones finished his Giants career with a 24-44-1 record and 70 touchdown passes to go along with 47 interceptions. New York will take on a $22.21 million dead cap hit in 2025.

Jones shared a goodbye to Giants fans upon taking to the podium on Nov. 21 — one day before his release.
“The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true,” Jones said. “I’m extremely grateful to the Mara and Tisch families for the chance to play here. The Giants are truly a first-class organization, and I have nothing but genuine respect and appreciation for the people who have built it and who helped carry on that tradition.
“I’ve met so many special people and created relationships that will last a lifetime. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches and staff that have done so much for me these past six years. There have been some great times, but of course, we all wished there been more of those. I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. No one wanted to win more games worse than me. And I gave everything I had on the field and preparation.”
