Davante Adams reveals hilarious reason behind Stephon Gilmore social media comment
When Packers receiver Davante Adams heard the news about the New England Patriots releasing their All Pro corner Stephon Gilmore, he quickly took to Instagram to recruit the soon-to-be free agent. Unfortunately for the fellow All Pro the Carolina Panthers swooped in and struck a deal with the Patriots before Gilmore could be officially released.
According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Adams had a very good reason behind his recruiting of the former Patriot corner.
Simply put, “to stir some s**t up.”
He did follow that up by saying that he was serious about wanting Gilmore to join him in Green Bay but knew it would be a long shot to get him.
Green Bay didn’t get a chance
The Packers would not even get a chance to pick up the phone and make contact with him, thanks to the aggressive maneuvering of Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer. The Panthers traded for the veteran cornerback Wednesday, sending a 2023 sixth-rounder to New England.
Gilmore is currently on injured reserve and won’t be able to return until Week 7. When he returns, he will be joining a star-studded and deep cornerback corp. Carolina spent their first-round pick in this year’s draft on South Carolina corner Jaycee Horn, but Horn was recently placed on IR. He went down with a foot injury in the Panthers’ Week 3 game against the Houston Texans. This injury led to the Panthers trading to acquire the services of the Jaguars 2020 first-round pick CJ Henderson.

Rounding out the big-name corners on the roster are AJ Bouye and Donte Jackson. Bouye is in his ninth year in the league and was a part of the stout Jacksonville Jaguars 2017 secondary. They came within moments of beating Tom Brady and the Patriots for a trip to the Superbowl that year. Jackson is the second-round pick of the Panthers back in 2018. The starting corner from LSU has been a ballhawk in his four years with Carolina.
Packers could still make a move
The Packers might have missed out on Gilmore, but have a chance at grabbing another big-name defensive star. Green Bay is landing former Dallas Cowboys Linebacker Jaylon Smith, who was shockingly released on Tuesday.
“Source: The Packers are, in fact, the likely landing spot for former Cowboys Pro Bowl linebacker Jaylon Smith. They are finalizing details,” stated Rapoport on Twitter. “The deal won’t be official until tomorrow morning. But Jaylon Smith had indicated Green Bay is where he wants to be. And the Packers beef up their linebacker corps with a former Pro Bowler.”
Adams may have been trying to stir up something, but the Packers could have seriously used Stephon Gilmore in their secondary. At least Green Bay is picking up Smith. Because with another Smith (Za’Darius) on IR the Packers could use the help on defense.
