Dave Canales analyzes Bryce Young's growth in second training camp
Dave Canales is seeing some tremendous growth from quarterback Bryce Young during his second training camp with the Carolina Panthers.
Of course, it’s Canales first time working with Young, as he was brought in following the former No. 1 overall pick’s subpar rookie season. However, the hype is beginning to feel real, after Canales waxed poetic about the quarterback while speaking with the media.
“Yeah, I saw some really good throws,” Canales said, regarding his sophomore quarterback. “I get excited about, ‘Okay, pockets over, time to move,’ and he keeps his eyes downfield and finds some nice completions after the timing of the play, on the move. Right. So, we’re not sitting there, we’re not camping there. He’s moving with that intentionality, and we’ll just keep pushing it. You know, it’s an ongoing thing. So I’m pleased with that.
“I’m really pleased with just the mechanics, the pre snap mechanics. We looked like a football team. We looked like an offense who knows what they’re doing, you know, and we’re still going to fine tune it. We’re always looking for perfection. But I’m happy with the growth from day to day from an operational standpoint.”
One area where Young has been improving is his ability on the run, and that’s something Canales wants to see more of throughout the summer, as he believes it’ll help the entire team improve throughout training camp, due to the dual-threat nature of many quarterbacks in the NFL at the moment.

“Fantastic, aggressive eyes. You know, so he’s looking down there, top down. You’ll always have your options here, you know, but it’s again, we’re talking about after the play, you know, and he’s being able to, you know, we’ll be able to find some explosive plays in there,” Canales added. “And he’ll know when it’s okay, it’s covered, tuck it down, go get us some yards and take care of the quarterback at the end of it. But I’m excited about that, because it trains the whole group. Trains the defense, because there’s going to be scrambled quarterbacks that they have to continue their coverage beyond their assignment.
“There’s going to be plays for our offense where this is the second or third play, and that’s when your conditioning really starts to play and trust it. Go get that next ball. We’ll take care of you. We’ll make our substitutions. But he’s training the whole group. The line has to continue to block and know when to let go. You know, so it’s the whole thing.”
Alas, it’s evident Dave Canales is confident in his quarterback entering 2024, but it’ll be up to Bryce Young to prove to his doubters it’s not a mirage, and he’s ready for stardom moving forward.
