David Montgomery injury update: Dan Campbell reveals Lions RB to undergo knee surgery, timeline revealed
The injuries continue to pile up for the Detroit Lions. Head coach Dan Campbell announced on Monday that running back David Montgomery is out for the year. Montgomery suffered a knee injury during Sunday’s loss to the Bills.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier Monday that David Montgomery had a significant MCL injury and would be out indefinitely. Campbell confirmed that he will miss the rest of the season.
“It looks like he’s going to require surgery that will put him out for the rest of the year,” Dan Campbell said. “He had gotten [the injury] at some point yesterday in that game. I mean David’s tough, man. He continued to play through and got it checked out today and realized that’s what it was. I mean he’s just the ultimate teammate, ultimate competitor.
“We’re going to miss him, man. He’s another one of these guys that got us to this position — helped get us to where we’re at. And the rest of us, we owe him to keep going and make sure that wasn’t in vain.”
David Montgomery finished the 48-42 loss to the Bills with just five carries for four yards. Despite the shootout loss, the Lions never got the run game going. Montgomery has 775 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns on the season.

After the loss, Campbell addressed the struggles in the running game.
“We never got our run game going, which was going to be a point of emphasis, and even out of those 15 carries, we just, we could never get it going,” head coach Dan Campbell said. “So that’s two weeks in a row. It’s not good enough. And it’s not them, it’s us, and that’s what’s frustrating too.”
Quarterback Jared Goff threw the ball 59 times amid a struggling run game with those involved and without Montgomery.
“I think we had to in some ways move on from it with the way the game was going,” Goff said. “Maybe we stick with it if the game is in a little bit of a different place, it starts to pop, and then it’s a different story. I don’t know. But no, there’s nothing significant there.”
