De’Aaron Fox will no longer wear No. 5 for his jersey number. Following the trade that sent him to the San Antonio Spurs, he’s switched to No. 4 since current guard Stephon Castle already wears the number.
However, he didn’t just choose No. 4 because it was the number closest to his old one. Instead, he’s honoring his wife, Recee, who is a native of the city and is the number she wore as a McDonald’s All-American during her playing days.
The Spurs posted the first official look at Fox donning San Antonio’s stripes on Monday night wearing the uniform, which can be seen below:
Fox’s move to San Antonio came during a three-team trade between the Spurs, Fox’s former team in the Sacramento Kings, and the Chicago Bulls. The Spurs received Fox and Jordan McLaughlin, while the Kings will receive Zach Lavine, Sidy Cissoko, and six draft picks with three in the first round and three in the second. The Bulls will then receive a trio of players of their own in Kevin Huerter, Zach Collins, and Tre Jones plus a pick.
Fox, a former All-Star and All-NBA selection, is in his eighth season that he had spent all with the Kings after they drafted him fifth in the 2017 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. He has averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals in that career with Sacramento.

He wore the number 0 at Kentucky, while his college teammate Malik Monk donned the No. 5 for the Wildcats.
Of course, Fox isn’t the only former Kentucky player to have been dealt before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. Former Wooden Award winner and national champion for Kentucky, Anthony Davis, is also heading to the state of Texas as a part of one of the biggest blockbuster trades in recent memory.
The Los Angeles Lakers sent Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick to the Dallas Mavericks for Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris. The deal also included the Utah Jazz, who will receive Jalen Hood-Schifino, a 2025 second-round pick via the LA Clippers, and a 2025 second-round pick via the Dallas Mavericks.
Now, the two former Kentucky superstars will join the same division in the Western Conference. The two teams will even match up in back-to-back games on March 10 and March 12, with both matchups set to be played at home for San Antonio.
