Deion Sanders opened up about the possibility of him becoming the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. While speaking to Skip Bayless on The Skip Bayless Show, Sanders revealed the only way he would have accepted the Cowboys’ head coaching position.

“The only way I would have done it, to be honest with you, is I knew, guaranteed, I had an opportunity to coach my sons,” Sanders said. “That’s it. Because other than that, why? It didn’t make sense to me.”

Skip Bayless then asked Deion Sanders if Cowboys owner Jerry Jones offered him the job. “I’m not going to say it was offered to me,” Sanders said. “I’m going to say it was an opportunity that could have presented itself. We didn’t go to the next level, but Jerry was always honest and straight up from Day 1. He’s always been.”

Sanders got to coach his sons, Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders, at Colorado for the last two seasons. Before that, the trio were together at Jackson State in 2021 and 2022. It’s not likely that Shedeur and Shilo will be playing for the Cowboys. Shedeur is projected to be a top-five draft pick, and the Cowboys are picking at No. 12. Additionally, Shedeur plays the quarterback position, and the Cowboys already have Dak Prescott.

Shilo is not a top draft prospect like Shedeur, and it’s likely he will be a late-round pick or sign with a team as an undrafted free agent. The Cowboys could take a chance on him, but that’s not a guarantee, which is one reason why Deion is not the head coach of the Cowboys.

Earlier this year, Deion Sanders received a call from Jerry Jones about the Cowboys’ head coaching job after the team parted ways with Mike McCarthy. “To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Deion Sanders told ESPN in January, via Adam Schefter. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

Sanders played for the Cowboys from 1995-1999 and helped the team win a Super Bowl during the 1995 season. In his five seasons in Dallas, Sanders was named to the Pro Bowl and selected to the All-Pro Team four times.

In 2020, Sanders became a college football head coach. He spent three seasons at Jackson State before joining Colorado in 2023. In his five seasons as a head coach, Sanders has posted a 40-18 record and has appeared in three bowl games.
