DeMarcus Ware reveals hilarious drug test mixup with Dallas Cowboys trainer
Former Dallas Cowboys defender DeMarcus Ware hasn’t suited up in almost a decade, which is why he was surprised to receive a text message from one of the team’s trainers on Monday. The retired linebacker got a message to report to the facility in Oxnard for drug testing, but the message was clearly not meant for him.
Just as Jerry Jones did during Ware’s induction into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor, the trainer mixed him up with current Dallas edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence. Happy to go along with the bit, Ware posted a video to social media that showed him rushing to pull out his pads to get ready to play for the Cowboys once again.
“Cowboys head trainer, Jim Maurer sent me this text last night,” Ware posted on Instagram. “I guess it’s go time 🤷🏾♂️. #94 + #90 + #11 sounds like a pass rush team to me 😤… ** of course I called Jim after receiving this text and we laughed about this because the text was meant for DLaw (DeMarcus Lawrence).”
Calling Maurer back to let him know about the error was important considering the Cowboys need DeMarcus Lawrence on the up and up now more than ever. They’re dealing with the loss of backup DE Sam Williams to an ACL tear this week. Maurer could probably avoid a mixup between Ware and Lawrence in the future by listing the latter in his phone as DLaw or even Tank, instead of DeMarcus.
Cowboys grapple with loss of Sam Williams to ACL tear
The Dallas Cowboys had big plans for Sam Williams this season, but following his ACL tear, it’s time for them to re-tool. New defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer commented on their next steps on Monday during a radio interview.

“I don’t know yet, honestly,” Zimmer said of the plan to replace Williams. “We’re looking at all of those guys. We’re just going to have to see. Until we get the pads on, it’s hard for me to make a lot of evaluations.”
Williams went down with an apparent left knee injury and had to be carted off the field. He sustained the injury while taking part in a special teams drill on Sunday. The team later confirmed that he tore his ACL and partially tore his MCL.
Williams was gearing up for his third season with the Cowboys, who selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss. He has suited up in 32 games over the past two seasons, tallying 8.5 sacks, 48 tackles (30 solo), 16 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles. Dallas expected Williams to once again serve as depth behind Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence this season.
