Denny Hamlin lays out surprising strategy for second round of NASCAR playoffs
There is no doubt about it, Denny Hamlin almost blew it in the first round of the NASCAR Playoffs. But he doesn’t plan on doing it again. With Kansas out of the way, how will Hamlin handle Talladega and the Roval?
After his lackluster performance at Atlanta to start the playoffs, Denny Hamlin was raising a lot of eyebrows. It appeared that he was almost afraid to race and he ended up having a terrible points day.
It was almost bad enough to sink his postseason chances. Now in the Round of 12 with the points reset and Kansas behind us – is he going to be timid at Talladega like he was at Atlanta?
After the Bristol race, Hamlin laid out his strategy for the Round of 12 on Actions Detrimental.
“Yeah so certainly, yeah if you’re someone like myself you want to go to Kansas and be on it. You want to have a big day right off the bat there. Be aggressive at Talladega, try to get some points,” Hamlin said, being interuptted by his cohost and producer and asked to repeat himself. “Be aggressive at Talladega, try to get some points.”
Denny Hamlin did not appreciate Jared and Travis poking fun at him for Atlanta. So, he laid out exactly what he plans to go for the Round of 12.
“I’m going to drive to my car’s ability, how about that? Do I need to reiterate? I was in no way shape or fashion able to drive my car around others until 50 laps to go at Atlanta. My car was out of control. I tried to race once, and I nearly crashed. So, I did what I could, alright, and it was good enough so it’s time to move on.”

This Sunday, he takes on Talladega. He has two wins at the track and won the pole award in 2023 for the Spring race, his fourth career pole at the track.
“Yeah Talladega, you gotta just, however it plays out,” the Joe Gibbs veteran explained. “If you get wrecked, you get wrecked. That’s just part of it.”
Denny Hamlin has work to do. He had a good points day at Kansas, but not great. A bad day or early DNF at Talladega would put him in a pecaroius position for The Roval. While Hamlin has improved on road courses in the last few years, he doesn’t want to see it come down to that track.
Only +11 to the cutline, getting points in Stages 1 and 2 will be important. Can Hamlin and the 11 crew get it done?
