Denny Hamlin is one step closer to winning a Cup Series championship as he advances to the Round of 8 of the playoffs at the ROVAL 400 on Sunday. After the race, Hamlin spoke to NBC Sports about being one of the eight drivers who are still in the playoffs.

“It’s such a tough spot to be in kind of up like we were because the only thing that really can hurt you is a really detrimental day so you can’t be as aggressive as you really want to but you can’t lose a bunch of track position either,” Hamlin said. “Great vibe, great job by this Sports Clips Haircuts Toyota team. Chris Gabehart and the team just did an awesome job of keeping us in it. Luckily we were able to come away with a top-15 there.”

Hamlin earned a P14 finish and it was good enough to place him in sixth place in the playoff standings. But he knows he has some work to do if he wants to advance to the Championship 4 (or NASCAR Cup Series Championship) race on November 10.

Denny Hamlin talks about motivation to win the Cup Series championship

In the next three weeks, the NASCAR drivers will head to Las Vegas, Miami and Martinsville for the Round of 8. Hamlin knows what he needs to do in the next three weeks as he’s appeared in the Championship 4 four times in his career.

In September, Hamlin explained on the Actions Detrimental podcast his motivation to win a Cup Series Championship. “I’m just going to do the best that I can, and try to go and get as many wins as I can before my career is over. That’s ultimately the list that I really, really care about, because the drivers that are in it are just the most elite. So, that’s my goal, and I’ve got plenty of time to get to the accomplishments that I want, and a Cup championship would just add to that,” Hamlin stated, regarding his chances of winning a title. “I mean, certainly would be such a big deal for me, my family. I want it for my dad, I’ve said it many times, I want it for my family and friends, as much as I want it for me.”
