Deshaun Watson injury update: MRI confirms Browns QB suffered ruptured Achilles
What was feared has now been confirmed. Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson did indeed suffer a ruptured Achilles on Sunday, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter.
The news was revealed by Schefter Monday morning on Twitter.
“An MRI revealed that Browns QB Deshaun Watson’s Achilles is in fact ruptured, as suspected, and his 2024 season is over,” Schefter posted.
Watson was carted off the field after suffering an Achilles injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s Week 7 home contest against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The injury was non-contact, occurring as Watson attempted to take off from the pocket. As Watson took off, his right Achilles appeared to pop, signifying the serious nature of the injury. Watson was in tears as he was carted off the field.
Watson, 29, is in his third year with the Browns after signing a then-record five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract after coming over in a trade from the Houston Texans (5-1). The three-time Pro Bowler has hardly looked like the quarterback he was in Houston, especially this season.
He entered Sunday’s game having thrown for 1,020 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions on 61.3% passing. His 21.3 QBR is the lowest of any starting quarterback in the NFL. The Browns own the league’s worst offense, averaging just 240.2 yards per game and 15.8 points per game.

LeBron James rips Cleveland Browns fans who cheered Deshaun Watson injury: ‘LAME AF!!’
Cleveland’s favorite son ripped Browns fans after their reaction to Deshaun Watson’s season-ending injury suffered against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7.
LeBron James took to X after Browns fans cheered when Watson was carted off the field on Sunday due to an apparent Achilles affliction. He claimed the reaction was “LAME AF” from the spectators, and saluted the fans who didn’t revel in the Cleveland quarterback’s misfortune.
“Cleveland Fans! Yall know how much we’ve been thru throughout the years both good, bad and indifferent. With that being said booing anyone that’s down with an injury let alone your own player is LAME AF!!” James posted on X. “To the ones who didn’t (salute emoji).”
Alas, the Watson situation is a little more nuanced than a quarterback who fans believe is overpaid performing well under expectations. There’s the off-field baggage the former first round selection brought to Cleveland, due to the numerous sexual assault allegations levied against him, and that’s soured his perception across the sports world, even in his home stadium.
