Detroit Lions fans went after officials during the Monday Night Football game when Seattle Seahawks linebacker Derick Hall sacked Jared Goff. Late in the second quarter Hall got past a Lions offensive lineman and sacked Goff by pulling him down by the back of his jersey with one hand. Lions fans wanted a horsecollar penalty but officials didn’t make the call because Hall was allowed to sack him that way since Goff was in the pocket. This led to the crowd chanting “bullshit.”

In 2023, former NFL referee and CBS Sports rules analyst Gene Steratore said: “If the quarterback is in the pocket, there cannot be a penalty for a horse collar tackle. However, once he leaves the pocket, he is offered that protection.”

The good news for Lions fans is the team had a 21-7 lead going into halftime. The play the Brown made was one of the few highlights for the Seahawks in the first half. Hall, who was selected by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft, is starting to come into his own. In his first three games this year, the former Auburn Tigers linebacker recorded three sacks. And through the first half of the Monday Night Football game against the Lions, Hall tallied four tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack.

Derick Hall discusses his goals for the 2024 season

“I think I’ve grown a lot,” Hall said in April, per the Seahawks’ official website. “I’ve always been a good run defender, then going into it and becoming a better pass rusher—that was the biggest thing coming off of last year and going into the offseason and into this summer—being able to develop that and being able to see the fruition of that is really good for me.”

And when talking about his rookie season, Hall said, “Personally, I don’t think it was up to par for my liking. There’s a lot of things I could have done better—being to understand the game better, being able to understand situations better, going about taking care of my body better, so now, having that year under my belt, being able to do a lot of those things on a consistent basis, I feel great, everything’s rolling fast and smooth, so I feel good. I’m ready to bring more to this defense.”
