Detroit Lions suffer trio of injuries with Terrion Arnold, Jahmyr Gibbs, Ennis Rakestraw Jr
The Detroit Lions are gearing up for their second game of the 2024 preseason, which will be a trip to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, August 17. But as they prepare for preseason game No. 2, they are currently dealing with a few injuries.
According to Colton Pouncey, the Lions beat reporter for The Athletic, Detroit is now dealing with injuries to three of its young, talented players: cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw and running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
At this juncture, the specifics surrounding each player’s injury are unclear. However, if head coach Dan Campbell and the Detroit training staff believe these injuries to be significant, Lions fans should anticipate their young crop of players possibly being held out of practice and a preseason game or two to ensure their health for the upcoming 2024-25 season as they look to defend their NFC North crown.
In the 2024 NFL Draft, Detroit spent first and second-round picks on bolstering their defensive secondary, taking Arnold out of Alabama in round one and Rakestraw from Missouri in round two. Both are in prime position to help the Lions solidify arguably their biggest area of opportunity last season. Gibbs, on the other hand, is heading into his second season with the Lions after they selected him with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Last year, in his rookie campaign, the former Crimson Tide running back narrowly missed eclipsing the 1000-yard mark as he ran for 945 yards on 182 carries with 10 rushing touchdowns. Gibbs also played a role in Detroit’s passing game with 52 receptions for 316 yards and one receiving touchdown over a span of 15 games.
Malik Nabers, Terrion Arnold involved in fight at Giants training camp with Lions
During a joint practice during training camp in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the New York Giants and Detroit Lions engaged in several scuffles. Those apparently carried over to the team’s practice together, which involved rookies and former SEC foes Arnold and Malik Nabers.

Arnold was guarding the Giants wide receiver during Tuesday’s practice, and after an incomplete pass attempt to Nabers, fireworks erupted between both teams. Lions safety Kerby Joseph and Nabers exchanged punches before Arnold and several others jumped into the action.
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was targeting Nabers in the end zone during a team period on a back shoulder pass. Arnold altered that for a pass breakup to force an incompletion on the play.
Things seemed fine between Nabers and Arnold, who exchanged some words after the play and have squared off on numerous occasions during their college days as players for LSU and Alabama, respectively. But as Nabers was jogging back to the Giants’ huddle, he threw an open-handed blow to Joseph’s helmet without breaking stride.
Naturally, that was followed by Joseph bringing the fight to Nabers and the two throwing several punches before Arnold, several other players, coaches, and personnel all got involved in breaking up the skirmish.
