Devin Leary named top performer at East-West Shrine Bowl practice
The college all-star game circuit is in full swing this offseason. These games are always critical in the eyes of scouts, GMs, and NFL decision makers, in evaluating incoming talent for their roster. The East-West Shrine Bowl practices have been taking place this week in Frisco, Texas. One player there who has turned some heads early this week in practice, is former Kentucky quarterback Devin Leary. Here’s what NFL.com’s Chad Reuter had to say about Leary’s performance on Tuesday:
“The issues Leary encountered this past season at Kentucky — getting the ball out late and throwing into coverage — showed up at times during Shrine practices. But he also impressed with his footwork in drills, the velocity and tight spiral of his ball and his ability to drop throws into the bucket down the sideline or in the corner of the end zone — like he did Tuesday to Michigan WR Cornelius Johnson,” Reuter wrote in his column, “Nine players who stood out in Tuesday’s East-West Shrine Bowl practices”.
“He also perfectly anticipated a throw over one defender and between two others to 5-foot-8 Oregon State WR Anthony Gould for a long gain (the second time this week he made that throw). Leary might not get picked until the middle of Day 3 because of his recent tape, but he offers tools with which an NFL quarterback coach can work,” Reuter finished.
According to KSRs Nick Roush, technology at the Shrine Bowl clocked one of Leary’s passes at 744.8 rotations per minute, the highest spin rate of any QB at the Shrine Bowl over the last three years. He threw the ball faster than any quarterback at the event (76.8 mph initial velocity, 49.0 average) and the second-longest pass (55.6 yards).
