DeVonta Smith injury update: Adam Schefter reveals Eagles WR's status amid concussion protocol
DeVonta Smith is currently in concussion protocol and won’t practice Wednesday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported players like Smith who are in the concussion protocol usually don’t make it back the next week.
Smith went down on a hard hit in the win over New Orleans Sunday, losing his helmet in the process. The Philadelphia Eagles were also without star WR AJ Brown the last two games.
As of now, it looks unlikely both will play Sunday in Tampa Bay.
“Neither player is practicing today, and let’s keep in mind that the Eagles have a bye week next week,” Schefter said on SportsCenter. “So if you don’t play either AJ Brown or DeVonta Smith this week, that would mean that they would have two weeks to rest up. DeVonta Smith suffered that big hit on Sunday against the Saints that knocked him out. He’s in concussion protocol right now. Usually players don’t bounce back from protocol in time to play the next week, we’ll see whether Smith can.”
In three games this season, Smith has 21 catches, 239 yards, one touchdown and 11.4 yards per catch.
Smith wasn’t the only one to be on the injury report. As Schefter reported, Brown could miss a third straight game in Week 4.

“AJ Brown has been dealing with a hamstring injury that he suffered after the first week of the season in practice, he’s missed the last two games,” Schefter said. “The fact that he’s not practicing today is not an encouraging sign. And again, I think you have to remember they have the bye next week, so if no AJ Brown this week, that means that he would have two weeks to rest up that hamstring and come back after the bye.”
Offensive tackle Lane Johnson also exited Sunday’s game against the Saints due to a concussion. Although he was spotted at practice by CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr.
Head coach Nick Sirianni declined to give any major update on injuries and cited the concussion protocol for Smith.
“The guys that are in the concussion protocol, I won’t comment on that,” Sirianni said Wednesday. “They’re working hard to get back. The other guys, you’ll have an injury report later today. We’ll see how that goes. We’re doing a walkthrough today just with how we came out of the game and just what’s best for these guys’ bodies at this particular point. We’ll have a good, tough practice tomorrow.”
