ESPN insider Adam Schefter provided an update on the former Alabama star during The Pat McAfee Show on Monday.

Schefter shared that his status for this week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is in doubt.

“They’ve got him and Lane Johnson in concussion protocol this week, so typically, normally guys in protocol usually don’t make it back for the next week,” Schefter said.

If DeVonta Smith does in fact miss the game against Tampa Bay it would be a big blow. The status of Eagles receiver AJ Brown was already in doubt as he has missed the past two games with a hamstring injury.

Smith and Brown are a dangerous duo when they are on the field together, but they could both be sidelined this Sunday.

“So now we’ve got two wide receiver questions for Philadelphia, not to mention a major one along its offensive line with Lane Johnson,” Schefter said. “AJ Brown, initially I said that he thought he would miss a couple of weeks. This would be a couple of weeks. So I’m going to guess that AJ Brown’s going to test out that hamstring to see how he’s doing.

“And DeVonta Smith has to go through the protocol to where he’s gotta get cleared. It’s always very difficult to predict whether a player will or won’t make it through protocol, other than more often than not they don’t. So that’s kind of where we’re at with DeVonta Smith, and the Eagles have two big questions going into a big week.”

C.J. Gardner-Johnson angrily calls out Khristian Boyd over hit on DeVonta Smith

Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson called out the New Orleans Saints (2-1) for the “cheap shot” taken against receiver DeVonta Smith during Sunday’s Week 3 matchup.

Smith suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter after taking a direct hit to the head from Saints defensive tackle Khristian Boyd. There was no flag on the play. Gardner-Johnson, who spent three seasons with the Saints, accused his former team of committing the “dirtiest sh*t” he’s ever seen in football.

“Man, that’s the dirtiest s— I ever saw in football, bro,” Gardner-Johnson said, via Tim McManus of ESPN. “Y’all obviously saw forward progression was stopped. For them to take a cheap shot on one of our key players, it goes to show what type of team that is. They’re front-runners.”

Smith laid motionless on the ground for several minutes after the hit. He eventually got up and was able to walk off the field under his own power. Smith hauled in seven receptions for 79 yards before exiting the game.
