Devonte Wyatt jumped off the page at the NFL Combine in March because of his speed. The former Georgia defensive lineman ran a time of 4.77 seconds in the 40-yard dash, the fastest of any defensive tackle participating.

That led the Green Bay Packers to select him 28th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, along with Bulldogs teammate Quay Walker. During an interview with Packers press after being selected, Wyatt revealed the moment he realized that he was not only big, but also fast.

“I think that point was when we were training for the 40 in Arizona,” the defensive tackle said. “They took me and Jordan Davis out of the big man group and moved us with the linebackers. That’s how I knew I was fast because our numbers was way lower than offensive linemen and defensive linemen.”

Wyatt is listed at 6-foot-3 and 304 pounds according to the Packers website, which is 11 pounds less than his listed weight this past season at Georgia. Jordan Davis, another Bulldogs teammate of Wyatt, ran a 4.78 in the 40-yard dash despite being listed at 340 pounds.

Wyatt was dominant at times for Georgia the past few years, accumulating 103 total tackles, 5.0 sacks and two forced fumbles for a loaded Bulldogs squad over four seasons. This past year he totaled 39 tackles (seven for loss), 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles while helping lead the Bulldogs to their first national championship since 1980.

A former four-star recruit in the class of 2017, Wyatt was the No. 25 defensive lineman in the nation per the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. He played his high school football at Towers in Decatur, Georgia where he began his high school career as a running back and track star, proving his immense athleticism. The versatile defensive lineman improved each season at Georgia, showing there’s high potential with his skillset.

Devonte Wyatt will look to put his speed to good use when he makes his NFL debut against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 11. Hopefully that can be the start of a promising career for the Georgia product as he hopes to make his impact felt as a rookie.
