When DK Metcalf was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, there was a question over whether he would still wear the No. 14 jersey number. That number is currently occupied by fellow Steelers WR George Pickens — and after some speculation on social media, it turns out that Pickens will keep his number.

Metcalf wore the No. 14 jersey number in high school, college at Ole Miss and for the entirety of his Seattle Seahawks run. Now, he will wear the No. 4 as he begins his tenure in Pittsburgh.

A similar instance occured this offseason with the Los Angeles Rams. WR Puka Macua changed his jersey number from 17 to 12 after the Rams signed Davonte Adams, who has worn the same number throughout his NFL career, to a two-year deal.

While Metcalf won’t wear the same number as before, it appears that the situation hashed out. Now, Metcalf can shift his focus to the football field. The Steelers appear to have strong faith the former Seahawks star having signed Metcalf to a five-year, $150 million extension upon his arrival in Pittsburgh.

The news comes after Metcalf had reportedly requested a trade out of Seattle last week. Multiple teams, including Pittsburgh, Green Bay and the Los Angeles Chargers, had been linked to him over the last few days with the Seahawks considering all their options. It then looked more likely after they also traded QB Geno Smith to Las Vegas on Friday.

On the field, Metcalf is two-time Pro Bowler and one-time Second Team All-Pro. During his six years in Seattle, he caught 438 passes for 6,324 yards and 48 touchdowns.

That averages out to 73 receptions a season for 1,054 yards and eight touchdowns. He was the team’s leading receiver in three of those years and was second in the other three in sharing a corps with Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. However, in career-low appearances this fall, Metcalf had his worst season since his rookie year in the league. He hauled in 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdown receptions, eight yards shy from a 1,000-yard receiving season.

Since 2019, Metcalf has had three seasons of over 1,000 receiving yards and the other three seasons were still very productive as well. In the other three seasons, he still hauled in over 900 receiving yards. The Steelers expect similar production as he begins his career in Pittsburgh during the 2025 NFL season.
