Report: DK Metcalf requests trade from Seahawks, team to 'explore options'

Since joining the Seahawks via the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, wide receiver DK Metcalf has elevated to an essential piece of the team’s offense, and one of the best pass-catchers in the entire NFL. However, his time in Seattle may be coming to an end, as he’s reportedly requested a trade.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport delivered the news on Wednesday: “Two-time Pro Bowl WR DK Metcalf has requested a trade and the #Seahawks have agreed to explore options, sources tell me and @RapSheet,” Pelissero posted on X. “Days before free agency, the 27-year-old Metcalf immediately becomes the top receiver available.”
As Pelissero alluded to, Metcalf immediately becomes the top wide receiver option on the market. He’s entering the final year of his three-year, $72 million deal, and it remains to be seen what the potential compensation required is, but there are few pass-catchers on his level in the league.
Moreover, Metcalf’s request comes after the Green Bay Packers reportedly had discussions with the Seahawks last week, per Corbin K. Smith of Emerald City Spectrum. For the Seahawks to send Metcalf to Green Bay, according to Smith, the Packers would have to give up their No. 23 overall selection in April’s NFL Draft, along with either Romeo Doubs or Dontayvion Wicks.
Meanwhile, Matt Schneidman, Packers insider for The Athletic, doused water on Smith’s fire, later stating “there has been no contact or negotiations as of now between the Packers and Seahawks regarding a DK Metcalf trade.”
All told, Metcalf, 27, has a $31.875 million cap hit in 2025. While he remains productive, tallying 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns last season, the emergence of Jaxon Smith-Njigba makes extending Metcalf an interesting dilemma for general manager John Schneider.
“Where do things stand?” Schneider said last week, via Gregg Bell of The News Tribune, regarding Metcalf. “I’m not sure. He’s on our team. Yeah, yeah. He’s a big, strong, fast, physical receiver.”

Head coach Mike Macdonald was much more open while addressing the importance of getting Metcalf more involved in the offense this season. Evidently, that might not be a bridge Seattle is forced to cross, if a trade comes to fruition.
“From my understanding, going into the Atlanta game, I think he was tops in the league in targets,” Macdonald explained. “I’m not sure where the numbers were, but it’s that trend of focus we’ve got on the offense that we’re shooting for.
“Then to Jaxon’s credit — and DK not being 100 percent throughout the second, third quarter of the season — it speaks to Jaxon’s development. But we want to get the ball to DK, we want to make sure that he’s a focal point of our offense for sure.”
Time will tell what the future holds for DK Metcalf. It seems as if he’s living on borrowed time in Seattle, but as we’ve seen this offseason with players such as Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams, nothing is set in stone, even when trade talks begin.
