D.K. Metcalf responded on Twitter to an NFL Hall of Famer’s comments made about his late fumble against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. Shannon Sharpe criticized Metcalf for trying to play “hero football” with time running out in the game, and Metcalf responded by calling Sharpe “washed up.”

D.K. Metcalf vs Shannon Sharpe on Twitter

Near the end of regulation in the Seattle Seahawks game against the Steelers, D.K. Metcalf caught a pass on the sideline that gave him plenty of opportunity to step out of bounds and stop the clock. Instead, Metcalf attempted to shake the defense in front of him and fumbled the football. Luckily, the ball was recovered by the Seahawks and they were still able to stop the clock.

After the play, NFL Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe criticized his decision on Twitter.

“What was D.K. thinking? Why try to play hero [football] in that situation?”

Metcalf responded Monday morning by telling Sharpe to quit questioning him, needling Sharpe in the process.

“Nothing to question. That was [a] ‘DUMB ASS’ play and your pride won’t let you admit it,” Sharpe responded back. “’You’ can’t question anything I’ve done. Pray your resume will be as complete as mine, PRAY. Enjoy the rest of your day.”

This prompted Metcalf to respond by calling Sharpe a “washed up wanna be” and drawing attention to the verbal jabs around social media.

After fans were quick to point out Sharpe’s resume and shortly after his response was posted, Metcalf seemed to cool down the tension by admitting Sharpe’s resume was something he hoped to match one day.

Neither messaged each other directly again, but Sharpe did share a video of his on field achievements later on Monday.

Sharpe had also criticized quarterback Geno Smith for the Seahawks loss on Sunday, but Metcalf and Sharpe did not discuss his comments on Smith on social media.

Seahawks speak with Cam Newton

The Seattle Seahawks are exploring all their options with Russell Wilson on injured reserve. According to Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Seattle has been in contact with veteran quarterback Cam Newton.

“Just so you know, we have talked to him. We’re talking to everybody that could help us,” Carroll said of Newton to Mike Salk of 710 ESPN.

Newton was cut by the New England Patriots prior to the beginning of the 2021 season. After being embroiled in a quarterback battle with rookie Mac Jones, the Patriots opted to go with the former Alabama star.

Last night, the Seahawks fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime. During the game, former Jets, Giants and Chargers quarterback Geno Smith was their signal caller. Although Smith played decent, the Seahawks lost due to a fumble that Smith couldn’t corral.

Wilson still has at least two more games to miss, and possibly more if he’s not healed up afterwards. If the Seahawks can’t figure out a way to win some games in his absence, their playoff chances might be gone by his return.
