Dodgers-Padres NLDS game delayed after Los Angeles fans throw objects toward San Diego players

The National League Division Series game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres on Sunday night was delayed after Dodgers fans threw objects toward Padres players. A video from Fox Sports shows Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar talking to Los Angeles fans before someone threw an object near him in the seventh inning. This led to Profar getting very angry and talking to the umpires. A few Padres players and manager Mike Shildt talked to Profar to calm him down.

Dodgers fans may be mad at Profar because he robbed a Mookie Betts home run in the bottom of the first inning. After Profar made the catch, he was seen apparently trolling the fans.

“No, I didn’t say anything, just I had to fight with them to catch the ball,” Profar said in the dugout after the first inning, per MLB.com. “They were hitting my glove.”

Profar added: “That was one of my wishes all the time: I want to rob a homer. And I did it in a playoff game, so it was awesome.”

Padres reporter Sammy Levitt said that additional objects were thrown on the field during the seventh inning. The PA announcer had to remind fans that throwing objects on the field is subject to ejection.

Dodgers and Padres have an intense rivalry

The Dodgers and Padres are battling for the right to play in the NLCS. The two teams are rivals as they play in the NL West and the Padres beat the Dodgers in the 2022 NLDS. In Game 1 of this year’s MLB playoff series, the Dodgers beat the Padres 7-5. Before the dealy during the Sunday’s game, the Padres were leading 4-1.

“This is going to be a good fight,” Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas said before the start of the series, per MLB.com. “Two teams that have been playing really good baseball, starting the year together in Korea. It’s been back and forth all year. We know each other really well and I feel like it’s going to be a really good series for baseball and the whole world of sports.”

“I think ‘unfinished business’ is something that resonates with our guys,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Like I said, I talk about it, but we’ve got to go out there and be about it, talk about the edge, the fight, but I really do feel that’s the mindset that we’re coming into. It’s an edgy group right now, which I think is a good thing.”
