Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel shares emotional statement about Tyreek Hill detainment
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel got very emotional when sharing his reaction to Tyreek Hill‘s detainment on Sunday. On Monday, McDaniel spoke to reporters about Hill being detained by police before the team’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“It’s hard for me not to find myself more upset,” McDaniel said. “Try to put myself in that situation. The thing that f***s me up is knowing I don’t know what that feels like. It’s very important that two things should be true. You let due process work and let information be gathered to appropriately project an opinion. But I can’t get away from the fact of what I know their experience to be.
“If you are Calais Campbell and going to work, whatever personal innocence you have, you are gigantic strong miraculous man that has done right in all ways, shapes and forms. There are elements to that that are very triggering. I think it’s supremely important to wait for information to be gathered before any rush to judgment. The feelings expressed to me are unsettling.”
Hill was placed in handcuffs for carless driving and a seatbelt vioation during traffic stop. The superstar wide receiver was also placed on the ground, and Campbell was also placed in handcuffs after stopping to check on Hill. Campbell said hewas detained for not moving his car quickly enough and standing inside of 25 feet in an attempt to de-esclate the situation.

“When you know you can’t truly understand, the unknown is what crushes me,” McDaniel said. “I can only forecast. My forecast: What if it’s worse? . . . Simply because of my appearance, I don’t have a history of feeling profiled. For me in particular, I feel pretty helpless at times.”

The Miami-Dade Police Department internal affairs division contacted hill about the incident, and Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said Hill’s lawyers are considering all options.
“Everybody has bad apples in every situation, so I want to be able to use this platform to figure out a way to like flip this and make it a positive on both ends,” Tyreek Hill said after the game. “On my end and also Miami-Dade, so that way we can continue together and do something positive for the community, because that’s what it’s all about, man.
“You guys are here to protect us as individuals, and I have a platform and I want to be able to team up with you guys. That’s all I’ve got to say.”
