An unfortunate trend has continued in NFL preseason football on Saturday night. The final preseason game for the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars was called early after another player had to be carted off the field with a serious injury. Dolphins wide receiver Daewood Davis had to be carted off with 8:32 left to play in the fourth quarter.

Miami released this update via social media shortly after the contest was called.

“Dolphins WR Daewood Davis suffered an injury in tonight’s game and has been taken to Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville for further evaluation. He is conscious and has movement in all extremities,” wrote the Dolphins via X.

After the game was called, Miami head coach Mike McDaniel shared a few thoughts on Davis and the situation as a whole.

“We’re just hoping for a full recovery. Have had some good news and hope to have even better news going forward,” said McDaniel.

“He’s a great spirit, first and foremost. He’s magnetic. He’s got a full personality to him. … His teammates really root for (him). That tells you everything you need to know about a human being.”

More on Davis

Davis was originally a part of the Oregon Ducks 2017 recruiting class, where he was a three-star wide receiver prospect. Former Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal moved him from wideout to corner following his redshirt freshman season in 2018, only to move him back to wide receiver the following fall camp.

From there, Davis would transfer to Western Kentucky, playing for the Hilltoppers in 2021 and 2022. At Western Kentucky, he played in a total of 26 games over two seasons, recording 106 catches for 1635 yards and 15 touchdowns while averaging 15.4 yards per catch. Davis would go undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft but signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie free agent.

As mentioned above, this is the second preseason game in 2023 to be called early due to a serious injury. The preseason week two matchup between the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers was also suspended following the injury to Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden. Fortunately, since the injury, Bolden has been released from the hospital and is currently back with New England.
