Doug Pederson hot seat: Adam Schefter reveals outlook for Jaguars head coach
After an embarrassing loss in London to the Chicago Bears, many believe that Doug Pederson’s seat is beginning to warm with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The former Super Bowl champion head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles was hired by the Jaguars ahead of the 2022 season, and he won the AFC South in his first season at the helm. He looked to be building something in Jacksonville, and the team entered 2024 with tremendous expectations, but this season hasn’t gone to plan, as Pederson’s bunch is currently 1-5.
As the Jaguars prepare for another game in London this coming weekend against the New England Patriots, ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided some insight into whether it could be the final shot for the head coach to save his job with the franchise.
“I’ll give you two schools of thought there. The first is that Shad Khan has been steadfast in his support of Doug Pederson, the Jaguars coach. He stood behind him, (saying) Doug Pederson’s a great man, and he said, ‘We’re not doing anything. We’re not making any changes. This is the best roster we’ve ever built,’ and we’ll take him at his word initially,” Schefter noted, via The Pat McAfee Show. “I also will point out to you, at the same time, that over the last nine years, there have been three head coaches who have been fired after games in London. We saw the Dolphins fire Joe Philbin right after they lost in London, we saw the Raiders fire Dennis Allen after they lost in London, we saw the New York Jets last week fire Robert Saleh after they lost in London.

“The Jaguars lost to one rookie quarterback yesterday. They play another rookie quarterback Sunday in London, Drake Maye. If they lose that game to New England and to Drake Maye, they then would be 1-6 with that long, transcontinental flight back to Jacksonville. Now, Shahid Khan has not given anybody any ideas that he’s thinking of anything. All I’m saying is there’s been a history of teams that have made moves after the losses in London. This is a team right now that is tremendously disappointing. This is a team that could be trading players before the trade deadline if they lose more games, because why wouldn’t you not want to accumulate draft capital? This is a team that outlaid a lot of cash in the off-season.
“Something isn’t working, whatever it is. If they go to 1-6, everybody’s waiting to see how Shahid Khan handles that. He has been steadfast in support and insisted he’s doing nothing. We’ve heard other owners say the same thing after trips to London.”
There’s no question Doug Pederson can coach, but his tactics may be falling on deaf ears in Jacksonville at the moment. Time will tell if he can turn it around, but a loss in Week 7 could doom the likelihood of him being afforded the time to get it done.
