New England Patriots (2-6) head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters that quarterback Drake Maye will be a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice.

With Maye returning to practice, that would indicate he has a shot to play in this Sunday’s Week 9 road contest against the Tennessee Titans (1-6).

Maye remains in concussion protocol stemming from the hit to the head he took in this past Sunday’s 25-22 Week 8 home win over the New York Jets (2-6). The 2024 No. 3 overall pick suffered the head injury after scrambling for 18 yards on the Patriots’ third offensive drive of the game.

Maye finished the drive before making way for Jacoby Brissett on the following possession in the second quarter.

Jerod Mayo details Drake Maye’s head injury in Week 8

Mayo said he didn’t initially see any warning signs that Maye had a concussion.

“It was called down from the league,” Mayo said on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday. “They wanted to do further evaluation. When I went in there at halftime, he wanted to go back out there, but obviously, he didn’t pass the test. And not going to get too far into that. But, at the same time, he went out there and threw a couple good balls after, I guess, supposedly put him in the protocol.”

Before leaving the game, Maye recorded the first rushing touchdown of his NFL career, a 17-yard score to give the Patriots an early 6-0 lead. Maye has provided a jolt to New England’s offense since taking over the starting job from Brissett in Week 6. He has thrown for 564 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions on 63.1% passing.
