Drake Maye, who will be one of the most-watched players at the NFL Combine, reportedly will not throw in front of scouts.

This is according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz. He quoted unnamed sources.

Caleb Williams, who is projected as the top pick of the draft, reportedly will not throw in front of scouts, either.

The NFL Combine starts later this week in Indianapolis. Quarterbacks are due to arrive in Indy sometime today.

The latest Maye development probably should not be that shocking. A host of big-name QBs have opted against throwing at the combine in past years. Instead, they show off for the NFL Draft scouts at their on-campus pro days later in March. These sessions are far more scripted, with the quarterback and his personal team having control of what he does.

So far, Williams and Jayden Daniels, the Heisman winner from LSU, aren’t participating in drills this week. Now add Maye.

In past NFL Draft combines, these quarterbacks have said no to throwing in Indy: Andrew Luck, Matthew Stafford, Robert Griffin III, Bryce Young, Sam Darnold, Joe Burrow, and Kyler Murray.

Quarterbacks, as usual, will be the most talked about position at the NFL Draft. But what is unusual is how many quarterbacks may go in the first round. There could be as many as six, which would tie an NFL record set in 1983.

In fact, the first three picks could be quarterbacks, if a player like receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. does not break up the draft podium. The Bears own the top pick and need to figure out if they will select Williams or trade down. Chicago’s quarterback is Justin Fields, the Bears’ first round pick from 2021.

The Commanders, at No. 2, almost certainly will take a quarterback. Maye is projected as the second-best of the quarterbacks, so he could end up as a Commander.

The Patriots probably are moving on from quarterback Mac Jones, meaning they’re looking for a QB fix in this year’s NFL Draft. Maye could end up in New England if the Commanders opt for Daniels.

Quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers will work out for scouts in Indy this Saturday.
