Patriots’ rookie quarterback Drake Maye is lucky enough to come from a family full of insanely talented athletes. And they also don’t mind cracking jokes with him from time to time. Maye recently had his NFL dreams come true on Thursday night, after he was selected No. 3 overall in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. And his brothers decided to send him a funny video message before the draft.

They called him a “pretty boy,” overrated, and a bi###.”

Of course, this quote comes from a now-viral scene from the 30 for 30 documentary about Michigan’s Fab Five.

It’s good that Drake Maye still has his sense of humor about him, because he’ll need it as a starting quarterback in the National Football League. Now that the ink is dried on his contract, playing quarterback in the NFL is one of the most difficult jobs in all of sports. It’s not for the weak of heart. It’ll be fascinating to see how his career plays out, especially with the new era beginning in Foxboro, with no Brady or Belichick on the sidelines.

Shortly after he was picked, his contract terms were revealed.

According to Spotrac, his projected rookie contract is worth 4 years, $36.6 million. There is a $23.4 million signing bonus. And all of the money is fully guaranteed. There is also an option for 2028, which would be his fifth year on the contract.

Drake Maye put up impressive numbers at North Carolina

Despite lacking sufficient talent around him in the 2023 campaign, Maye tallied 3,608 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns and another nine scores in the ground game. His 63 completions on throws at least 15 yards downfield ranked second in the FBS.

For his efforts, he was named an All-ACC Second Team member and a Manning Award finalist. Maye’s redshirt freshman season was even more impressive. Maye exploded onto the scene with 4,321 passing yards and 38 touchdowns, while rushing for 698 yards and seven TDs.

Maye ultimately opted to redshirt his true freshman season after only appearing in four games. Maye finished his collegiate career with 618 completions for 8,018 yards, 63 touchdowns and 18 interceptions while completing 65% of his pass attempts.

Drake Maye played high school football at Myers Park (NC), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 45 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
