Driver killed during 'on-track incident' at Daytona International Speedway, another injured
During an “on-track” incident at Daytona International Speedway, a driver was killed and another was injured on Saturday. NASCAR officials are aware of the situation as NASCAR owns the facility. The incident occurred during an Audi Club rental session.
There is still no clear picture on what led to the incident and the injuries of the driver are not known at this time, according to WESH 2 in Florida.
“We are saddened by the passing of a driver after they were transported to an area medical facility following an on-track incident during today’s Audi Club track rental session,” a statement from Daytona International Speedway to the NBC affiliate said. “Additionally, our thoughts are with the driver who was injured during the same incident. Daytona International Speedway will coordinate with both Audi Club and local authorities during their investigation into the cause of the accident.”
The event was in part organized through International GT. The group also shared a statement on the matter.

“We confirm the death of a driver who was transported to a local hospital after an incident during International GT’s practice session at Daytona International Speedway. A second driver involved in the incident was also transported to a local hospital. Our deepest sympathies go to the family of the driver who has passed. We would like to give our well wishes to the second driver during their recovery.”
This is an awful tragedy. Hopefully, there are answers to how this occurred and plans to prevent it in the future. Daytona International Speedway hosts events throughout the year. Most of the time, they go by without major issues. Still, motorsports are dangerous at any level.
