Early odds for 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year
It’s been less than a week since the 2022 NBA Draft, but Las Vegas oddsmakers already have their favorites to win the 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year award. Neither name is surprising, either.
Former Duke star Paulo Banchero and and former Auburn sensation Jabari Smith are both listed at +350 to win the award. Smith looked primed to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but in the minutes leading up to the draft, ESPN reported the Orlando Magic were moving toward picking Banchero. They did, and Smith ended up falling to the Houston Rockets at No. 3 overall after Chet Holmgren — who’s listed at +550 to win Rookie of the Year, tied with former Purdue star Jaden Ivey — became the No. 2 pick.
Two players with the best odds to win Rookie of the Year took a different path to the NBA. Dyson Daniels played for NBA G-League Ignite and Ousmane Dieng starred in France before coming stateside to play in the association.
Shaedon Sharpe also appears on the list after an unconventional road to becoming the No. 7 overall pick of the Portland Trail Blazers. Sharpe was a class of 2022 recruit, but reclassified to the class of 2021 and enrolled at Kentucky in January. However, he didn’t suit up for the Wildcats and decided to stay in the draft, where he ultimately became a lottery pick.
