Elton Sawyer: NASCAR will review Austin Dillon's Richmond finish for potential penalties
In one of the most controversial wins of the season, Austin Dillon gets the checkered flag at Richmond, but is there more? NASCAR will be taking a look at the last lap to make sure that there are no penalties that need to be handed out this week.
Not only did Austin Dillon overdrive a corner by about four car lengths and send Joey Logano into the wall, he then came down on Denny Hamlin and spun him out in order to win the Cook Out 400.
After the race, Elton Swayer was made available for questions by the media.
“Our sport has been a contact sport for a long time. You always hear, ‘Where’s the line, did someone cross the line?’ I would say the last lap was awful close to the line, we’ll take a look at all of the available resources from audio to video, listen to spotters, we’ll listen to crew chiefs and drivers and if anything rises to a level that we feel like we need to penalize then we’ll do that on Tuesday,” Sawyer said, via Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports.
Seems that any decision will be made on Tuesday.
“We’ll look at all of the available resources, look at audio, look at video, look at SMT Data as we normally do in a situation like this and make a determination on Tuesday.”
As far as taking away the win from Austin Dillon? Well, Sawyer doesn’t think historically NASCAR has done that. However, he does feel this could set a precedent. At least, he isn’t counting out the possibility.
“Historically that hasn’t been our DNA to take races away but that’s not to say that going forward this wouldn’t start to set a precedent, we’d have to look at it.”

Austin Dillon wins in controversial overtime
In an overtime restart, Austin Dillon got beat off the line by Joey Logano. It wasn’t over there, though. Dillon came back on the last corner of the last lap and spun Logano out. The 22 went into the wall and Denny Hamlin was caught in the wreck as well.
Dillon entered today’s race 32nd in points. He was the third-worst full-time driver in the Cup Series this season as far as points are concerned. This was the fifth career win for Dillon, his first on a short track.
This pushes both Chris Buescher and Ross Chastain out of the playoff picture. Bubba Wallace now moves up to the final transfer position. He is only three points above the cutline.
Joey Logano was absolutely incensed after the race. He couldn’t believe that Dillon got away with a move like that. Logano had beaten him off the line at the restart. That final corner was another story entirely.
