Emmanuel Forbes injury update: Commanders CB to undergo surgery on torn UCL
Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes. will have surgery on Friday to repair a torn UCL in his thumb, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Forbes is getting the procedure done now so it won’t be an issue for him throughout the season.
Forbes suffered the injury in the Commanders’ season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Before the news of Forbes’ surgery, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said he didn’t expect the former Mississippi State star to miss any time.
“Yeah, he banged up his [thumb] and so he’ll have a splint on that today,” Quinn said, per Sports Illustrated. “We got good news, it’s not gonna knock him out. But he is gonna wear a splint on that [hand] to help protect that today and we’ll work it through the week. And like Emmanuel, like a number of the guys, man, we’re working really hard to develop him. Would he want some plays back? You bet. But I’d also say this is a young player that we’re developing and working with him and so, he’s improving and going to improve.”

Emmanuel Forbes talks being benched last season
Forbes finished the season-opening game with four tackles. He is in his second year with the Commanders as the team drafted him No. 16 overall last season. Forbes played in 14 games with six starts in 2023 and recorded 38 tackles one interception and 11 passes defended. Those are solid numbers, but the 2023 season was inconsistent for Forbes who was benched at one point during the year.

“I’ve never been benched before,” Forbes said at the time, per the Commanders’ official website. “But it was like a learning experience. Luckily, I talked to my guy, [Eagles cornerback] Darius Slay, and he’s been benched before, and he said to just keep my head up and keep coming to work.”.
