ESPN analysts evaluate Deion Sanders as potential next Dallas Cowboys head coach
As the Dallas Cowboys continue to toil in disappointment, some are theorizing they could look towards Deion Sanders to save them this offseason.
Sanders would represent a homecoming of one of Dallas’ favorite sons, and he’s proven to be an impressive coach in his own right, both at Jackson State and Colorado. He has the Buffaloes in the College Football Playoff hunt at the moment.
The ESPN Get Up crew wondered if it could lead to him making the jump to the NFL in 2025, specifically with the Cowboys. It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
“It seems like Deion Sanders is very interesting and exciting, which seems like that’s more important to Jerry Jones than anything else,” former player turned analyst Dominique Foxworth said. “He’s gotten Colorado turned around pretty quickly, so that suggests that he has some coaching ability, to be able to do it at multiple different places. I’m sure it’s a job that he can do. I’m not sure that it’s a job that anyone can succeed at, given the current situation and the way expectations are, the way the franchise has been built. So sure, Dieon is so unorthodox a figure in coaching, he’s so unique, that maybe it will work.
“But I don’t have any reason to believe that anybody — I don’t think [Bill] Belichick goes there and fixes it. I would love to see Mike Vrabel, another great coach that I would love to see in that situation. But imagining Mike Vrabel trying to operate in a situation where the owner is giving press conferences outside the locker room before they then can speak to you, it seems absurd. It’s a situation where I think most self-respecting coaches, like top of the top coaches, would not be interested in, which is why I’m not sure than Deion should even consider it.”
Continuing, former NFL interim coach and longtime offensive lineman Jeff Saturday believes Sanders to Dallas would be a fantastic fit, but he’s not sure if Jerry Jones would be able to handle all the press his head coach would receive.
“I actually like the fit. I think the issue would be Jerry more than Deion,” Saturday added. “I think Jerry might not like the shine that Deion would get and create. Deion sticks by his conviction and does not care. He’s not going to placate to anybody, whether it’s Jerry Jones or anyone else.”

Finally, NFL insider Dan Graziano put it all into perspective, explaining how the Dallas head coach gig is one of one, and if Sanders does choose to take the job with the Cowboys, he’s not going to bet against him.
“We’ve talked about this Dallas Cowboys coaching job and how different it is from anything else. … Could Deion Sanders coach the Cowboys and be successful? Sure, I don’t think we should underestimate Deion Sanders’ coaching ability at this point,” Graziano added. “I think he’s exceeded all expectations.
“I just don’t — from the other end, it doesn’t feel to me — it would be out of character for Jerry Jones to hire somebody that would get that much more attention than he gets.”
Alas, there’s no guarantee that Deion Sanders and the Dallas Cowboys will be a match this offseason, but it’s certainly an exciting possibility to consider, as the franchise wonders what the next step is to get back to their winning ways.
