Just under a month before the NFL Draft, Tyler Shough is gaining some steam. The Louisville Cardinals product was recently mocked to the Cleveland Browns at No. 33 overall by ESPN’s Mel Kiper. That would make Shough the fourth quarterback on the board.

ESPN’s Matt Miller agreed with his colleague, saying Shough would be a great fit for Cleveland. It’s an organization with question marks at the quarterback position, both short and long-term. Shough could be able to play from the get-go for the Browns.

“I think Tyler Shough has the best field vision of any quarterback in this year’s draft,” Miller said Tuesday on ESPN2. “Some of that is because of the experience. He had seven years in college. He could have earned a doctorate and he pretty much did in football because his ability to see the field. The game has slowed down for him and because of that, he could step in right away to play for this Cleveland Browns team.”

Shough’s experience is the biggest thing for Miller. Seven years in college and being a high draft pick are not too common. But multiple big-time injuries and time spent at three schools mean Shough is further along in his playing days than others.

Maybe Cleveland could follow a Bo Nix-type model with Shough. Nix found a great deal of success as a rookie with the Denver Broncos. He spent five season in college between Auburn and Oregon. Head coach Sean Payton was able to make things translate quickly, leading Denver to the playoffs.

“He’s going to give you that arm strength, give you some mobility, and again, that experience factor is so huge,” Miller said. “We saw it last year with Bo Nix, how well he was able to step in and play right away. Tyler Shough has some of that same ability.”

Shough began his career sitting behind Justin Herbert at Oregon under head coach Mario Cristobal. He soon transferred to Texas Tech before Louisville wound up being his final destination. One season there saw Shough surprass 3,000 yards, adding 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Cleveland could be hoping for a similar impact ahead of 2025, just at the next level. Miller sees a path where the idea is possible. And with Shough already being 25 years old, finding early success might be the biggest key if spending a premium draft pick on him.
