ESPN NFL insider proposes ridiculous trade involving Jahmyr Gibbs, Myles Garrett
ESPN NFL insider Mike Tannenbaum believes there is one move the Detroit Lions (6-1) should make to cement themselves as a Super Bowl favorite, just as long as they are willing to part ways with running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Tannebaum, speaking on Friday’s “Get Up,” proposed a trade which would send Gibbs, along with three first round picks and a 2026 second round pick, to the Cleveland Browns (2-6) in exchange for edge rusher Myles Garrett. The former New York Jets (3-6) general manager said the Lions can “win the Super Bowl” with Garrett given the way the offense has performed through seven games this season.
“The Detroit Lions are gonna acquire Myles Garrett for three first round picks, Jahmyr Gibbs and a second round pick and the Detroit Lions are gonna win the Super Bowl.” Tannenbaum said, via Awful Announcing. “They need a pass rusher in the worst way. Aidan Hutchinson may come back. This guy [Garrett] is still young, in the prime of his career. And if I’m Detroit, I can win the Super Bowl.
“Jahmyr Gibbs is a good player, but he’s replaceable. … [General manager] Brad Holmes, who came from the Rams, f them picks, these are gonna be low picks… Why wouldn’t they win the Super Bowl with Myles Garrett with the way the offense is going.”
Tannenbaum’s bold, outside the box proposal was not exactly met with glowing reviews from his fellow panelists. Ryan Clark in particular, walked off set before Tannebaum could even explain his thought process.
Mike Tannebaum panned by colleagues for wild Jahmyr Gibbs, Myles Garrett trade proposal
Tannebaum’s trade proposal does sound ridiculous on the surface, however, you can certainly argue the Lions should be in the market for a veteran pass rusher after Hutchinson underwent surgery earlier this month for a fractured left tibia and fibula. Detroit has compiled five sacks in two games since Hutchinson’s injury. They had 15 sacks in the previous five games, Hutchinson leading the way with 7.5.
Garrett, the reigning AP Defensive Player of the Year, is arguably the league’s best pass rusher, with 92.5 sacks since entering the NFL in 2017. He could very well be available via trade as the Browns have already gone into sell mode, sending veteran wideout Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills (6-2).

But does trading four picks, plus Gibbs, make sense for Detroit? Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson would probably argue against it, as Gibbs is a major piece to his offense, No. 1 in the NFL averaging 33.4 points per game. Gibbs, along with David Montgomery, make up the league’s best backfield duo.
“Sonic and Knuckles,” as they call themselves, have combined for 1,006 rushing yards and 14 total touchdowns this season. The offense runs through both, and Gibbs is still ascending in just his second year in the league after being selected 12th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Like Clark, Bart Scott was in disbelief at Tannebaum’s suggestion. Instead of giving up a haul for Garrett, Scott said Detroit should instead go after Garrett’s teammate, Za’Darius Smith. The 32-year-old remains a productive pass rusher, with 5.0 sacks in eight games this season.
“You got the right team, wrong player,” Scott told Tannenbaum. “Go get Za’Darius Smith and keep your picks. Jahmyr Gibbs is your home run hitter. They are a team which is based in running the football. Za’Darius Smith would be just fine. You can get him for a box of Kool-Aid.”
