ESPN: Scottie Scheffler released from Louisville PD custody after early-morning arrest
Scottie Scheffler has been at the center of an unbelievable story in golf and in sports this morning over the course of the last few hours in Louisville. However, that appears to be coming to a conclusion as the morning continues on.
Per Mike Greenberg on ESPN, the Louisville Police Department has released Scheffler following his arrest going into Valhalla Golf Club this morning. With that report, his updated arrival at the course is for 9 am ET after the tournament already shifted his tee time back to 10:08 am ET.
“Scottie Scheffler, I am being told, as we speak, has been released from custody and is expected to arrive at the golf course at 9 a.m. That is 20 minutes from now,” said Greenberg. “It is a little over an hour earlier than his tee time would currently be scheduled for.”
Police arrested Scheffler and booked him earlier on this morning.
A fatal accident involving a pedestrian and a shuttle bus around the course unfortunately led to this matter altogether. The traffic from said incident caused a backup of cars, which the golfers and those involved with the PGA Championship were able to move around per reporting. That’s why officials moved back the original tee times due to delays involved with that.
With those being the circumstances, Scheffler attempted to move on but police looked to stop him when trying to do so. At that point, the officer attached himself to the car and held on for several yards before Scheffler brought his vehicle to a stop.

From there, officers detained Scheffler by removing him from his car and seating him inside one of theirs in handcuffs. They then took him to their department of corrections in downtown Louisville. Upon his arrival, Olivia Russell at WAVE 3 News reports that they charged him with “assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic”.
Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, sits in a tie at 12th at -4 after the opening round yesterday in the PGA Championship. That included an incredible eagle shot on the opening hole to start this major very well, even if this will now hang over him in the second round and into the weekend.
Now, as best that he and that golf reasonably can for now, they’ll all have to turn their attention back to the course.
“Again, to the degree golf is the factor here – and I suppose to at least some degree it is – he is very much in contention to win this year’s second major,” said Greenberg.
