With the coaching carousel going in the NFL, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian had his name come up again over the weekend.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was asked about his reporting of Sarkisian’s candidacy in the pros while on ‘Get Up’ on Thursday. He said there will be teams among the current ones with vacancies who will have interest in him as an option. That total could then go up if he were to win in the College Football Playoff.

“Well I think there are a couple of teams that have some interest in speaking with Sark after the season ends,” said Schefter. “So, if Texas were to lose this week, then that would free him him up to go do that if that’s what he wanted. And, if they win and go on and somehow find a way to win the national championship, I would think there might be even more teams that would be interested in talking.”

“It just looms out there as a possibility that I think there are some NFL teams that do have some level of interest and we’ll see what that translates into during this interview process with six NFL teams currently having head coach openings,” Schefter said.

Among the stops on Sarkisian’s resumé includes two jobs in the National Football League. He was the quarterbacks coach of the then-Oakland Raiders in 2004, along with a two-year stop as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons from 2017 to 2018. The Falcons posted scoring offenses in the top half of the league both seasons with an average of 24 ppg. and 377 yards.

That’s beyond Sark’s other experience at major programs like USC, Washington, Alabama, and now Texas. However, EJ Manuel pushed back that Sarkisian would consider leaving Austin for the NFL. That’s certainly so with who’s there to play quarterback next season for the Longhorns.

“We can all get phone calls but that don’t mean you’ve got to answer it, you know I mean? You’ve got Arch Manning waiting in the wings as well,” Manuel said. “That’s why I think – look, if you do get some calls from the NFL? Look, Sark coached in the NFL so naturally you’ll get those things. But there’s no way, guys, he’s leaving Texas to coach an NFL team knowing that he has that quarterback. No way, no way no way.”

Still, Dan Orlovsky responded by saying the right opportunities could be something that Sarkisian could be interested in with the two franchises that he mentioned.

“I mean, if I was Sark, and Jerry Jones called me and said, ‘I want you to come coach the Cowboys‘? I would be like, alright. If I was Sark and the Chicago Bears called me and said you get to come and develop – because that’s the thing too. I know he can develop quarterbacks. You get to go coach Caleb Williams?” Orlovsky said. “I’m listening to both those phone calls, for sure.”

First and foremost, Sarkisian has a semifinal in the CFP on Friday. Only from there, or after an appearance in the national title game ten days later, will anyone know where he stands as far as a career change or not regarding the NFL.
