A legendary member of the 1972 Miami Dolphins team has died, with Eugene “Mercury” Morris passing away at age 77.

The Associated Press reported Morris’ death, and the family provided a statement on behalf of the two-time Super Bowl champ and three-time Pro Bowl selection.

“Beyond the field, Mercury was a devoted father, a loving brother, a loyal friend, and a pillar in the community,” his family wrote in a statement. “His presence extended far beyond football, as he touched the lives of many throughout his time in Miami.”

Mercury Morris played halfback for the Dolphins during their famous run through the 1972 campaign, the lone unbeaten season in NFL history. He split carries but managed to win the hearts of fans anyway.

The talented running back ran for a career-high 1,000 yards during that 1972 season.

During his career, Morris racked up appearances in 99 games, starting 42 of them. He spent the first seven years of his career in Miami, followed by a final season in San Diego.

When he retired, Mercury Morris had racked up 804 carries for 4,133 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also caught 54 passes for 543 yards and a touchdown.

Morris’ career and work following his playing days left a lasting impact, including on current Miami running back Raheem Mostert.

“Rest in paradise to a true legend Mercury Morris!” Mostert wrote on Twitter. “It was an honor getting to know you as a player and person.”

Mercury Morris was drafted by the Miami Dolphins out of West Texas State in the third round of the 1969 NFL Draft. He would become a two-time Super Bowl champion, while also being named to the Pro Bowl from 1971-73.

He led the NFL in rushing touchdowns during the 1972 season, then led the league in yards per attempt in 1973. He was named to the Dolphins Walk of Fame in 2013.
