Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott spoke after the team’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, detailing what happened when he suffered an injury early. On a short-yardage catch early in the game, Elliott re-injured his knee while being tackled.

Ezekiel Elliott aggravates knee injury versus Chiefs

Elliott has been a feature of the Cowboys’ injury reports over the past two weeks with a knee injury that has bothered him. He has been listed as limited in several practices over the timespan.

During the first quarter, his right leg was twisted as linebacker Willie Gay landed his weight onto Elliott’s ankle. The tackle was routine, but the impact was immediate as Elliott had to limp off the field and miss multiple plays on offense.

“Just the same knee, the same knee injury I’ve been dealing with,” Elliott said, via quotes distributed by the team after the game. “It’s feeling better, but I rolled up on it, and kind of hurt it. Overall, it’s definitely getting better.”

“It’s definitely frustrating for us, especially the way the defense played today,” Elliott said about the Cowboys’ failure to score a touchdown for the first game this season. “We just need to go out there and make more plays.”

Elliott finished the game with only 32 yards on nine carries and 36 yards on six catches. The Cowboys lost to the Chiefs 19-9, and fell to a 7-3 record for the season. As their NFC rival Green Bay Packers lost as well, the Cowboys missed a chance to take second place in the conference behind the Arizona Cardinals.

CeeDee Lamb head injury

The Cowboys also saw star receiver CeeDee Lamb suffer a scary injury in the second half against the Kansas City Chiefs after his head hit the field before halftime. As quarterback Dak Prescott threw to the end zone as the second quarter was ending, the pass intended for Lamb was intercepted. On the play, Lamb’s head bounced hard off the ground and Lamb was assisted into the locker room for halftime.

The Cowboys ended the first half with more frustration after Prescott’s pass was intercepted, taking away a chance at a potential field goal. Unfortunately, the bigger result of the play would be Lamb’s injury. After his helmet bounced off the field, Lamb was examined for a potential concussion in the locker room.

While the Cowboys did not confirm any specific diagnosis, they informed the broadcast team that Lamb was ruled out for the remainder of the game with a head injury.

Lamb had only three catches for 14 yards in the game before leaving with injury. The absence of Lamb is compounded by fellow star receiver Amari Cooper’s absence. Cooper was ruled out before Sunday’s game after testing positive for COVID-19. Cooper was not vaccinated, and will be forced to quarantine for at least ten days.
