“After a horrible night the town is heavily impacted: dust, mud, and the smell of gasoline everywhere,” he wrote. “Currently people are struggling to find food and especially places to stay, after many have been evacuated from their own homes. Please, anything you can do to help is appreciated.”

Earlier in the week, Tsunoda sent out well wishes to those living in the area. In a post on Twitter, the driver wrote, “I really hope all the people who live in the Emilia-Romagna region stay safe in the next few days.”

Formula One decided to call off the race earlier this week due to the severe nature of the flooding in the area. It wanted to place safety above all else, opting to cancel the event.

According to BBC News, the floods in Italy have forced at least 13,000 people to evacuate from their homes. The severe conditions have also resulted in 13 deaths.

Formula One calls off race due to flooding

On Wednesday, Formula One made the official decision to call off the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It said it could not guarantee the safety of the fans, drivers or race teams because of the severe weather situation in the area.

“The Formula 1 community wants to send its thoughts to the people and communities affected by the recent events in the Emilia-Romagna region,” F1 said per TMZ Sports. “We also want to pay tribute to the work of the emergency services who are doing everything they can to help those in need.

“It would not be right to put further pressure on the local authorities and emergency services at this difficult time.”

Formula One could potentially reschedule the race for a later date. Whether or not that will happens will be determined at a later date.
