Flau'jae Johnson discusses 'amazing' experience recording with Lil Wayne, getting Kim Mulkey in music video
It’s no secret that Louisiana has been a hot bed for the hip hop scene for a while now, producing artists such as Master P, Soulja Slim, Curren$y and recently names such as Kevin Gates and NBA Youngboy. The names go on and on.
Of course, New Orleans native Lil Wayne tops that long list of southern rappers. So when LSU women’s basketball star Flau’jae Johnson had the opportunity to work alongside him on a track — it was something she couldn’t turn down.
“It was super cool,” Johnson told Paul Finebaum at SEC Media Day about her collab, ‘Came Out a Beast’ with Lil Wayne. “I actually got the Lil Wayne feature because of basketball, which was crazy. After we won the national championship game, Sue Bird was like, ‘Lil Wayne, are you gonna do a song with Flau’jae?’ And he was like, ‘yeah.’
“And then coach Coach [Kim] Mulkey, she was talking — you know, Coach Mulkey knows everybody — so it just kind of happened. And the song happened, the video happened. Coach Mulkey was in the video, So that was great. It was amazing. The whole situation was a blessing.”
Mulkey’s appearance in the music video is the first thing viewers see in the video. It depicts Mulkey coaching Johnson and her teammates, ridiculing them for how they’re playing. She did not appear during the scenes where Johnson and Lil Wayne are rapping, which would have been quite the visual for LSU fans to see ahead of the 2024-25 season.

“People forget that I have two children,” Mulkey said. “They’re now grown, but when Lil Wayne and Flau’jae did their thing, my son thought it was the coolest thing ever. And he goes, Mom, you really, really don’t understand how big a deal it is. ‘Lil Wayne, mom, Lil Wayne!’ And he just kept screaming it at me.
Being a Louisiana-native herself, Mulkey admitted she knows a bit about rap, being from southern Louisiana. While it’s now exactly her tempo, she’s happy her star guard has found her niche in Baton Rouge.
While Johnson’s extra-curricular activities have seen her perform on stages on national television and alongside some of hip hop’s biggest stars — her main focus right now is preparing for the upcoming college basketball season.
“We’ve got a new team. Every day we have to come in, play hard and try to stack days,” Johnson told Finebaum. “That’s what it’s about right now. So, of course, music is where my heart is, but I’m itching to play. I’m itching to get on the floor.”
