Florida Highway Patrol officer suffered broken ankle on final play of Bucs-Falcons game
The Florida Highway Patrol officer who was on the field during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons game suffered a broken ankle on the final play. David Schiele of WTSP shared the news on social media, saying the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) gave the update via email. The FHP also mentioned that Falcons cornerback Mike Hughes helped render aid to the officer after the incident.
The injury happened when a Buccaneers player caught a Hail Mary pass out of bounds and rolled into the officer. The Buccaneers were looking to make one final big play but came up short as they fell to the Falcons 31-26. The Falcons now have sole possession of first place in the NFC South with a 5-3 record. The Buccaneers drop to 4-4 and are now one game behind the Falcons.
“Good day, good win,” Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said after the game, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The guys battled until the end. It’s always great to get away with a division win. We talk about ‘outrun the South’ and the guys have absolutely bought into what we want to do. It’s nice to take a nice lead like that. To be able to start out next week, make the corrections we’ve got to go make out there and keep getting the results we want. I’m really fired up about what we did today.”
It was another big day for Falcons QB Kirk Cousins as he threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Through eight games, Cousins has thrown 14 touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

“It was great to get a win any way we can on the road against a division opponent that I think was a really good football team,” Cousins said. “It took all three phases and people making plays – the turnovers by our defense and special teams and then (we) made some plays on offense.
“If you’re looking at where we need to be better – I think penalties hurt some drives. I think they have going back several games. You have those untimely penalties that make it hard to overcome. Certainly, the turnover backed up was not what we wanted. There’s a lot to improve upon, but you love having those conversations on Monday after a win. We’ll take it, and we will build from here.”
