WATCH: Former Alabama wide receiver Cam Sims makes beautiful touchdown catch
Former Alabama Crimson Tide receiver Cam Sims is fighting hard to maintain his spot on the Washington Commanders’ 53-man roster. And if he keeps making spectacular catches, like the one he made against the Kansas City Chiefs in Saturday’s preseason game, he should have no problem staying on the main roster when week one of the regular season rolls around.
On a third-and-seven from the Chiefs nine-yard line, the Commanders came out in a shotgun twins-stacked formation. Quarterback Tyler Heinicke took the snap and, after looking left, turned right and found Sims in the back of the end zone. Heinicke put the ball high to where his 6-foot-5 receiver could make a play. And that is just what Sims did as he toe-tapped at the back of the end zone, making the catch for six. You can check out the play in the video below.
Sims joined the Commanders after the 2018 NFL Draft as an undrafted rookie signing. After a promising preseason in his rookie year, his season was cut short after suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Washington’s first game of the season. Since then, Sims has spent the majority of his time on the Commanders practice squad.

Washington has activated him a handful of times during his time with the team, including last season, where he had arguably his best performance of his career in the playoffs against Tampa Bay. Sims finished that game with seven catches for 104 yards. For his career, the former Crimson Tide wideout has recorded a total of 49 catches for 715 yards and three touchdowns.
If Sims keeps going at this pace, it will be the first time since his rookie season that he will start the year apart of the Commanders’ active roster.
