Former Bills, Syracuse wide receiver Mike Williams on life support
Former NFL receiver Mike Williams is on life support following injuries sustained during an accident while working at a construction site, per the Tampa Bay Times.
Williams’ father, Wendell Muhammad, provided details of the accident which took his son’s life on a GoFundMe page set up by Latrina Moore in Dallas. A steel beam fell on Williams’ head, causing swelling in his brain and spinal cord that was ruptured. Williams suffered complete paralysis in his right arm as well as his lower body from the waist down.
He passed out this past Friday at around 9 p.m., suffering from severe breathing problems. Williams was rushed to the ICU, where doctors founds his lungs were filled with water. Even after removing the water from his lungs, however, Williams never gained consciousness.
Mike Williams played five seasons in NFL with Buccaneers, Bills
Williams, a fourth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Syracuse, spent five seasons in the NFL. He led the Buccaneers in receiving as a rookie, hauling in 65 receptions for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns. Williams finished second in AP Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. In four seasons in Tampa Bay, he caught 215 passes for 2,947 yards and 25 scores.

One year after signing a six-year, $40.25 million deal with the Buccaneers, Williams was traded to the Buffalo Bills, his hometown team. In his lone season in Buffalo, Williams hauled in eight receptions for 142 yards and one touchdown.
Prior to his NFL career, Williams was a three-year standout at Syracuse, compiling 2,044 yards, 133 receptions and 20 touchdowns. Williams missed the entirety of the 2008 season after the university dismissed him from school following accusations of academic dishonesty. He then quit the team midway through the 2009 season. Williams sits eighth on Syracuse’s all-time receiving list.
