Former Chargers defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley hired as Packers defensive pass game coordinator, per report
The Green Bay Packers have added another individual to their defensive staff. According to ESPN NFL Nation Packers reporter Rob Demovsky, the Packers are hiring former Los Angeles Chargers defensive Derrick Ansley.
“The Packers have the last major piece to the new defensive staff now in place. Former Chargers DC Derrick Ansley will be the new pass game coordinator, per a source. There will likely be a few quality control or assistant position coaches added but all key positions are filled,” Demovsky said via social media.
Ansley was originally the Chargers defensive back coach, taking the position in 2021. After two years in the role, he was promoted to defensive coordinator ahead of the 2023-2024 season.
As former Los Angeles head coach Brandon Staley’s defensive coordinator, Ansley did not get much of an opportunity to showcase his worth as a play caller and orchestrator of the defense as Staley maintained those responsibilities last season. However, he did get a chance to do so towards the end of the season after Staley was relieved of his head coaching responsibilities.
In the season’s final three games, against the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs, the Chargers would come up short but put together better defensive performances. Against the Bills, they gave up 24 points but limited Josh Allen to just 237 yards passing with one passing touchdown and one interception. The following week against Denver, the Los Angeles defense tightened up even more, allowing just 16 points and allowed seven third-down conversions on 17 attempts.

To end the year, Ansley and the Chargers held the Kansas City Chiefs to just 13 points. Granted, the AFC West division champs and representatives for the conference in the Super Bowl were resting the majority of their starters. Still, with and see calling the plays, Los Angeles limited Kansas City to just 268 yards of total offense, allowed six third down conversions on 16 attempts, and picked off starting quarterback for the game Blaine Gabbert once.
Packers are expected to hire Anthony Campanile as linebackers coach
The Packers are also hiring Anthony Campanile as the team’s new linebackers coach. That’s according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Green Bay already has its defensive coordinator in place with Jeff Hafley.
Campanile was previously with the Dolphins. Coincidentally, Miami hired ex-Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry as its linebackers coach.
