The Packers are searching for a new defensive coordinator after dismissing Joe Barry earlier this week. It appears as though former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is a serious candidate for the job.

Staley is interviewing for the defensive coordinator position, according to a report from Dianna Russini.

Brandon Staley was the head coach of the Chargers for nearly three seasons, compiling a 24-24 record. Prior to becoming a head coach, he was a successful defensive assistant with the Bears, Broncos and Rams.

The 41-year-old Staley was the outside linebackers coach for the Bears and Broncos, before spending the 2020 season as the defensive coordinator for the Rams. Los Angeles had the top scoring defense in the NFL during his one season with the Rams.

Staley went 9-7 in his first season with the Chargers, before reaching the playoffs in Year 2 after going 10-7. His Chargers team held a 27-0 lead over the Jaguars in a wild card game, before blowing the lead and falling 31-30.

Los Angeles started the 2023 season with a 5-9 record, leading to Staley being fired. The Raiders blasted the Chargers 63-21 on Thursday Night Football in Staley’s final game with LA.

Jim Harbaugh has since taken over for as the head coach of the Chargers, and Staley is still looking for a job. Green Bay could be a good fit for Staley. The Packers are coming off of a 9-8 season that included a win over the Cowboys in the wild card round of the playoffs and a close loss to the 49ers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Report: Former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry to interview with Eagles, Bears

After the Green Bay Packers opted to part ways with defensive coordinator Joe Barry this week, the dismissed assistant is already lining up interviews. According to reports, Barry will interview for the Philadelphia Eagles’ open linebackers coach position on Friday. He also has an interview lined up with the Chicago Bears, for an unspecified position, according to Dianna Russini.

Coaching linebackers has been the former Michigan and USC standout’s specialty since joining the coaching ranks after his playing career.

The Green Bay Packers made an unexpected run to the NFC Divisional Round, but they began making some changes to their coaching staff this week. While the Packers defense wasn’t terrible in the playoffs, Green Bay still decided to part ways with Barry. Barry’s unit held steady for the majority of the game against San Francisco, before allowing the 49ers to rattle off a 12-play, 69-yard game-winning drive in the final six minutes of the game.

Barry, 53, has been a defensive coordinator for seven seasons in the NFL, serving previous two-year tenures with the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders, before joining the Packers in 2021. Throughout his career, he’s also coached for the 49ers, USC, the Chargers, the Buccaneers and the Rams. He served as Sean McVay’s assistant head coach in Los Angeles from 2017-2020.
